#12866 closed bug (no change required)

Switch to hrev50421 from hrev50397: I lost the ability to hear any sound.

Description

As stated in the subject I updated hrev50397 to hrev50421, and I am no longer able to hear any sound from any app: Mplayer, MediaPlayer, SondPlay and also from the CLI playfile: I didn't touch any media configuration, but now I'm unable to hear sounds from the rear jack where I have plugged loudspeakers, and also from the front jack where I plugged the earphones. I don't get any error (and from MediaPlayer the vu-meter shows the audio out activity).

The output of listedv properly shows my audio device:

device Multimedia controller (Audio device) [4|3|0]
  vendor 8086: Intel Corporation
device 3a3e: 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller

Some suggestion? What else can I check?

Well, odd behaviour: firstly I burned hrev50424 on a disc (so to test a clean installation of Haiku) and I found the same issue: no sound from the output of my sound card; then I'm back on my installation and I attempted to install the modified HDA driver which Pete Goodeve gave me years ago (this one: https://dev.haiku-os.org/ticket/9134), then the sounds was udible again as usual; then, again, I removed the driver (booting Haiku with user addons disabled, since the driver installed under /home was in use), reboot to my Haiku installation and the sound was again present and usdible, so I suspect that this issue could be related to the HDA driver instead of to the Media Server.

Just for the record: I shutdown Haiku and then booted again: I lost again the ability to listen any sound. In the last months I don't experienced this behaviour.

There's nothing in that rev range that could have caused this.

Generally reporting tickets like that isn't helpful in any way to get them resolved. If we don't have more infos no luck we can identify the issue. Is it known that sometimes drivers get in an unusable state, I experienced issues where running linux before to reboot into Haiku made certain hardware not working. Generally providing a syslog would be appreciated, also listdev don't say much. What is interesting is if the hda_driver actually is able to run the sound card, that can be seen easily from syslog. I'd suggest also cleaning up media settings.

Reporting ticket like this isn't surely helpful; in fact I asked what I could attempt to check (you could simply tell me to post the syslog, however); I wasn't also aware of the fact that sometimes drivers fall in an unusable state.

However here ticket:12867#comment:1 you gave a good hint: I had an addon which causes these troubles; I removed such addon (audiosplitter.media_addon) and I no longer had troubles with this ticket and with ticket:12867, so feel free to close both. Just for the record: the audiosplitter.media_addon wasn't mentioned inside the syslog.

Retest using hrew52012. I use a related chipset and sound works for me.

Resolution: no change required
Status: newclosed

Closing per reporter request (user installed a media addon, causing the audio loss).
