This ticket should be blocked by #7868, not #7805. Can somebody with permissions correct the mistake. Sorry for the noise.

BeOS and Haiku use the Desktop metaphor in the most consistent manner.

Instead of the strange combination of windows on (in?) a desktop that Windows went with in the days when BeOS was around, they went with file cards to represent files, laying on top of a desktop, just like in the real world. These file cards have tabs on the top, also just like in the real world. Perfectly consistent.

With tabs placed on the left you leave this consistency and damage the metaphor.

You also seem to assume that text that's rotated 90 degrees is still readable enough, which is at least doubtful.
It also forces users to be more aware of which tab symbol to use: the square or the 'two square'. This disturbs the workflow.

The OS should function as something so consistent that you can fully rely on it and also so logical that it fully gets out of the way in order to let you smoothly and quickly accomplish what you set out to do.

It doesn't take much to destroy this hard to reach full reliability that the interface professionals at Be Inc. have achieved back in the day and which ideally should survive in the recreation of BeOS that Haiku wants to be. See it as a house of cards.

Now that I see it, and reflected upon it some more, I agree with -Meanwhile-.
Better just keep the window tab where it is. Maybe stretched to full width as the contents of a window below that peeks thru the gap could be irritating.

Resolution: no change required
Status: newclosed

There is an undocumented way to move window tabs to the sides for developers that really want it, though. But it will probably stay that way.
