Description

I am having a problem sending mail, however, I can't debug it because the mail log window seems be stuck in some sort of rendering loop.

You could go into Terminal als stop the mail_daemon with: launch_roster stop x-vnd.Be-POST
Before starting it again with /system/servers/mail_daemon, make sure it's not running anymore (kill it with ProcessController, for example).

The output in Terminal may provide some insights.
