#8302 closed bug (fixed)

SoundRecorder not recording

Reported by: HAL Owned by: korli
Priority: normal Milestone: R1
Component: Applications/SoundRecorder Version: R1/alpha3
Keywords: Cc:
Blocked By: Blocking:
Platform: x86

Description

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Set Media prefs App for recording from microphone.
  2. Click record button on SoundRecorder and start speaking.

Result: A. a pop up notification saying; cannot connect to selected input.

  1. There is no sound level indication in the level meter.
  2. Click the record button again to stop recording.
  3. Click the play button.

Result: No sound is heard. In Media prefs app, if I uncheck the mute button in playback for the microphone, with the microphone near the speakers I get immediate feedback. This indicates the microphone input is been supported by the driver and it is behaving as expected. I have not tried as yet another recording source like line input.

The was an error by the web site that somehow changed my bug report slightly. I only actually had A & B as a sub result after 2. The letters C & D should be as I typed them 3 & 4. For continuation of the steps. Not serious but a bit strange.

I was testing in hrev43668. Two drivers seem to be available for sound input and output: Auich Nvidia & Nvidia Nforce4. I had both input and output set to Nvidia nforce4. The other does not seem to work. That may be because I also have another high definition audio hardware built into my graphics card but not connected but is it the hda driver meant for that?

I tested SoundRecorder with CD in set in Media prefs app. Does not work either.

  1. I also tested Auich in audio output in Media Prefs but left audio in at Nvidia nforce4.
  2. Tested Auich in audio input in Media Prefs and left audio output at Nvidia nforce4.

Result: Both ways did not work. Tested both audio in & audio out at Auich. Does not work. Cannot here any output (Media Prefs output unmuted) sound either from CD. Only hear output sound in step 2 or when both Audio in & Audio out are set at Nvidia nforce4. I

I tested to see if there was microphone feedback with Media Prefs Audio input set at Auich and Audio output set at Nvidia nforce4. I can get feedback at this setting. So the Auich works alright at input setting. This seems to point at SoundRecorder alone and not drivers, at least for this bug.

The tile of this bug report should be "SoundRecorder not Recording" not "SopundRecorder not recording". Please someone edit this.

I was testing again in hrev43877 the bug does not appear for me now. Since I reported this bug I have had nearly complete change of hardware. Also the installation of Haiku I did reporting the bug with was installed over the top of the version before. same thing over and over for quite a lot of versions back. This time a did a fresh install and now only have one sound driver: HDA Audio. Sound Recorder seems to work now. I am not certain what this is related to, if it is different hardware, fresh install or change of installed version. The problem was going back quite a bit with many versions I tried except for now. Also in Media prefs I had two sets of controls: One for HDA Audio and another for ATI HD Audio. Now I only have HDA Audio. The message in the attachment, "Cannot connect to selected input", might have related to conflict between the two drivers.

HAL, you mentioned input is working now. What motherboard and version of HDA do you have?
