This is a break-apart of the issues listed in #7660.

It seems you are unable to join WiFi networks with special characters or spaces in the SSID.

I am pretty certain that this was fixed long ago. Did you actually reproduce the issue or did you just copy the comment of Adrien (which he questioned himself further down)?

copy + paste :-) I haven't tried to connect to a wireless network with weird characters.

If it is no-longer an issue lets close it as resolved. I have a small portable wireless access point I can set the name to something weird on and test. Give me a little while to confirm.

I'm trying to properly track the state #7660 as it is kind of a mesh-up of some valid, some no longer valid issues we're considering blockers to R1/beta1

I still had problems trying to get wifi networks to work in a train station this weekend. The SSID was "_SNCF wifi-direct", but I don't know if that was the problem or if it was something else. Other networks in range I managed to join, but this one wouldn't work. Unfortunately I didn't have another OS on my laptop to try, so it may be that the public wifi network was down for one reason or another.

I should try this again with wifi-N disabled. This may have been the actual problem after all...
