I think some semantics changed, yes. Since this is Markdown, we should replace all the <pre> sections with ``` sections and remove the backslashes from them, this should fix the problem.

I fixed those back in August 2018: 59ebd5f and after seeing that "--" doesn't need escaping in a pre-block, reverting a few escapes in b3408d6.
I'm pretty sure I checked those changes (that's how I saw I had to revert some escaping), and it looked OK back then. Has some setting of the server changed?
BTW, CuteMarkEd shows the the "--" correctly in pre and tt-tags. Can we configure the server to not need escaping in those tags at least?
