#5660 assigned bug

82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller only works with OSS with output set to Center/LFE (r35981, GCC2Hybrid)

Reported by: CyberKitsune Owned by: korli
Priority: normal Milestone: Unscheduled
Component: Drivers/Audio/HDA Version: R1/Development
Keywords: Cc: cyberkitsune09@…
Blocked By: Blocking:
Platform: All

Description

The native HDA Driver detects the card, but no sound is produced, I can hear some static from headphones. OpenSound only works on Channel "Output 1 (RAW)" with connecter.black.function1 set to center/LFE, and only on the headphones. (Rather buggishly, as it is OSS.)

I am using rev 35981, and would you like a syslog with the HDA driver installed or OSS? I had to remove the HDA driver to use OSS, but I'll attach the syslog without OSS first.

Well, I just discovered that if I set it to "Output 0 (RAW)" with OpenSound, and have Center/LFE set, sound comes out of my computer's speakers, and Output 1 (RAW) uses headphones only with "Center/LFE" selected.

Sorry, I added the same syslog file four times because each time I tried to attach it, I got an error saying it wasn't added for some reason that I forget. Anyway, it's the exact same file EACH time.

Hello Paul, I'm glad you have sound in Haiku with OSS now (good blog btw). Still, I'd like to try to debug this if you don't mind.

A few questions:

  • this computer is a "Dell Dimension E520"?
  • have you tested a version of Linux on it? FreeBSD?
  • do you build Haiku from the source? Are you able to apply a patch?
  • do you attend Begeistert?

Hi Korli Thanks for your comment. Yes, the computer where I have Haiku is a Dell Dimension E520 (3GB RAM, GeForce 7300 LS) of a little more than three years old. However, I only acquired it for myself about 6 months ago.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 RC1 on this computer also (in addition to Windows 7). Sound works perfectly in these OSes. However, I don't have FreeBSD on this machine but, if it would be of any help to you, I'd be happy to install it. Still plenty of HDD space available.

No, I didn't build Haiku from source this time and the version I'm using here is R1A2.

Begeistert? Well, up to now, no. I'm more of an enthusiastic, but relatively inexperienced, amateur than a seasoned professional. I just do this for fun.

If there is any further information I can provide, or tests I can perform for you, I'd be happy to oblige.

Thanks also for your comments on my blog. However, it's really just a personal diary of my computer stuff and I put it online primarily to avoid losing it. :-)

Cheers Paul

Audio is now completely broken in ICH8 family, both with native and opensound, on hrev45264 gcc2hybrid. Attaching listdev and syslog output.

Milestone: R1/beta2Unscheduled

Removing HDA audio tickets from Beta2 milestone, no one has worked on it and opensound is available at least as a stopgap.
