Warning about USB ports

Reported by: Handmaus Owned by: nielx

Component: Documentation Version: R1/beta4

Description

Maybe a little warning paragraph could be added at the end of the intro of (https://www.haiku-os.org/guides/installing/making_haiku_usb_stick/)?

Something like:

"Be aware that, in some computers, not all of the USB ports are usable to boot from. Either because it's a limitation of the machine itself, a limitation of Haiku, or any other reasons like a failing port. So it is advisable to try all of the USB ports in case something goes wrong in the booting process, and also worth trying in case of other erratic behavior even if the system is already able to boot correctly."

I don't think this is neccesary. We can't support faulty hardware.. can also be loose co

It's not about supporting faulty hardware at all, precisely the opposite. The implicit message was "Hey, maybe it's not Haiku's fault (maybe yes), could you please try again with a different port?". Anyways, a lot of the people that encounter such simple problems end up asking in the forums and then can be directed towards this bugtracker. I suppose this two things are also better for user engagement. I was thinking more about the shy people like me, that tend to not ask for help.

Are there any bugreports about such machines (not the ones with broken ports, but the ones where the port otherwise works but is not bootable).

It would be interesting to investigate this and fix the problem.

Regarding the warning, we can't have warnings for every possible thing that can go wrong in the guide (there's a lot) and I don't think this is the most common problem people will have? So before adding a warning for this, we should have warnings to try to use failsafe video mode, to not use some generations of AMD machines that will randomly crash, and so on.

We can only put a general warning that Haiku is in beta version, that hardware support is not perfect and we don't have drivers for everything or sometimes the drivers are buggy and it can take some determination to get it running. But I don't see why this very specific issue would deserve a mention.
