[boot fail] can't find boot volume

Haiku fails to find a boot volume on my Core2Quad machine. It sticks at the fourth icon, and after some time shows a "PANIC: can't find boot volume. Welcome to kernel debugging land !".

Machine:

• core2quad
• 4gb ram
• sata (using "ide" compatibility mode in bios didn't change anything)

I'll try some of the boot options and post the results here.

This happens with the Alpha 2 ISO image as well as the latest build from 17 july 2010.

More information:

• my BIOS has 3 options for SATA operation mode: ide, raid and ahci. Tried the 3 ones with no luck.
• tried to disable SMP, ACPI and IDE DMA in Haiku boot options: no change either
• enabled to debug output. Here my CD drive + partition (name "Haiku", ISO9660) is listed, but it won't boot from it

Please report your mainboard. I had a similar problem on a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UDR3 rev1.6. It worked in AHCI mode. After upgrading the BIOS to support the memory I used, it stopped again - now there was a new option "XHD/RAID" which does allow booting Haiku (but not into the existing Windows installation). Also make sure, your drives hang on the SATA ports serviced by the Intel chipset, many mainboards especially for Quad/1366 CPUs have an additional SATA controller. Maybe your CD drive is connected to that one?

Can you recheck this with a recent Haiku build? It may have been fixed recently.

The same problem happens with Alpha 3 (tested with the ISO image). I cannot attach any syslog:

• my computer doesn't have a serial port
• my computer doesn't have a reset button, so I cannot have the in-ram syslog either

If that's not enough I can run some diagnosis tool using a linux live cd if needed.

Strange, that's the same kernel panic I get when I try to boot from an alpha3-iso. Never gave it a second thought, though, because I attributed the boot failure to an incorrectly burned CD (cdrecord in haiku) - I can boot fine from a microSD card (install from alpha3-raw image with Installer in alpha2).

However, apart from the almost same (my system crashes on thread11/CPU0) kernel panic I see not too much similarities between your setup and mine. Compared to your system my laptop is ancient: Pentium M (Centrino - single core), IDE, < 2GB RAM, Intel 855PM chipset, ATI MOBILITY Radeon 9000.

I'm going to test booting again with an alpha3-anyboot CD.

Unfortunately, alpha3-anyboot CD crashes with an identical kernel panic. Fortunately, I found the culprit: my bootable SD card in an usb card reader. After removing the card, I successfully booted into Haiku. With the SD card, I have 4 bootable devices (CD (Haiku - alpha3), microSD (Haiku Installation - alpha3), SD (Haiku - alpha2), hard disk (Windows, Linux, BeOS)). Oddly enough, when booting from CD with all these devices attached and entering the haiku boot options with SHIFT I can only switch between CD and microSD as boot device - SD card is not shown.

I suppose my findings won't really help your problem, though. Sorry.

Since the panic enters KDL you can use the "reboot" command to reboot as well, though it requires the keyboard to work in KDL still.
