#6660 assigned enhancement

[IDEA] generic compatibility layer backend for audio-plugins

Description

KXStudio and UbuntuStudio are going to adopt NASPRO bridges by default in order to provide LADSPA and DSSI (VST soon) to all softwares that supports LV2 & dynamic manifest extension.

In other words, NASPRO can provide a "generic compatibility layer" for all a/v softwares that needs to use 3rd-party (audio) plugins...

It would be great to have something similar inside the system, before the audio software development "start".

Hope that inspires !

In Haiku, you would provide a media add-on that bridges that functionality. There already was support for VST modules this way in BeOS via a third party app (see http://www.bebits.com/app/1176).

My thought would be to add in a library of DSP math libs/or math lib add on's and give the developers skin tools, very similar to VST but less propriatary, secondly native kernel DSP will have factors of performance improvement over current vst .dll model popular on windows.

Lets all be honest. Linux is hardly a player in the recording market. its mostly mac AU and windows VST.

Dunno if can help in any way, but i found this project that seems really promising:

"FeSTige is a GUI for fst and dssi-vst, allowing you to run Windows VST plugins on Linux."

OK, seems that NASPRO is no more.

JUCE from RawMaterialSoftware is more mature, complete and adopted: JUCE (Jules' Utility Class Extensions) is an all-encompassing C++ class library for developing cross-platform software.

It contains pretty much everything you're likely to need to create most applications, and is particularly well-suited for building highly-customised GUIs, and for handling graphics and sound.
