Description
In Firefox clicking a link with the middle mouse button while holding down the Shift key causes the link to be opened in a new tab and the new tab to become active.

I have never had nor heard of this being an issue...
Maybe you misread, it's only when middle-clicking a link. Web+ (and most other browsers) have had this feature for ages. Adding that holding SHIFT switches to that newly opened tab automatically, is just a slight (and welcome) enhancement of the existing feature.

that is the most annoying feature on the planet, becuase many mice have very poor detection of full clicks and simple page scrolling can lead to opening vast numbers of tab's. Please do not make this a defualt on feature unless it can be easily turned off.
