82946GZ/GL Integrated Graphics Controller works in VESA mode only - widescreen resolution does not work at all

IBM ThinkCentre m55e with 82946GZ/GL Integrated Graphics Controller. Only VESA graphics works, but maximum resolution is 1280x1014 (widescreen does not work). MOnitor identified correctly as Samsung SyncMaster 22".

The above is with a DVI connection

(with VGA it is very similar, except it shows more resolutions - also wide screens - but all is out of sync when selected. Only 1280x1024 works)
