Description
Had a mishap (see #12107 for related data) and needed to reinstall the system. I can no longer find the wifi modem in preferences, so can't set it up. No hardware on the system has changed and wifi is available from a USB stick, which is how I'm currently logged on.

I had in the past an issue with disappearing network interfaces. Something (I think opening the the networking prefs) created the file /system/settings/network/interfaces
that lacked IIRC my LAN interface. Have a look and maybe delete that file. Just a hunch, could be something complete different in your case...

After deleting that file, you may also need to manually enable the interface:
ifconfig /dev/net/.../0 up
I'm not sure how the current network preflet behaves with regard to this, but the old one used to not show disabled interfaces at all.

Did you have to run the install-wifi-firmwares.sh script to download necessary firmware files for your wifi hardware after you installed haiku the first time? The wifi firmware package is removed if you have to re-install haiku (happens to me all the time - I can see my wifi modem only after re-installing the firmware package and a reboot).

Thanks, I'll check these settings files.
taos: My wifi device is supported by default now, so don't really have to download firmware. Driver is iprowifi3945 which used to be missing, but is now included in the build. It's also showing up in the /dev/net tree so isn't a driver issue.

humdinger: You da man! I have no idea what created that file, but 'interfaces' was causing the system to not scan actual interfaces.
Fixed, but no idea why it happened.

Heading should be hrev49218, a bit dyslexic due to influenza. ;-)
