Description
We use the #haiku irc channel as much as the website as a first contact porthole for bringing in new users and / or developers. Suddenly the channel is locked and one has to "register", whatever that means, to ask a question.

I have been registered on freenode for ever ... i get:
[x] #haiku Cannot send to channel
This is where new people are sent for help, This is not welcoming, and it is not working. I feel like I have been gaged and anybiody that is not in the Haiku Dev's club as well ... This needs to be removed!!!

Trolls will be trolls... but requiring registration to access #haiku seems a bit much. Few projects go to such extremes.
Not that I have much to say about it - since I rarely hang out there any more (mostly due to the trolls...).
In any case - I vote for removing such pointless limits and simply not feeding the trolls.

This is not constructive... you can read the Haiku IRC channel all you want but if you wish to speak you should register your nick on the IRC server this very reasonable as it protects your nick from being abused by others. Its just a method of preventing defaming someones good name by impersonating them. It's been this way since forever... and IRC has been working fine in the meantime.
Its not like you aren't free to create a "#haiku-driveby" channel either for people want to chat without registering etc...

Reopening, as I don't agree with waddlesplash either and I don't think this has been discussed properly with other members of the project before taking action.

I actually fully agree with waddlesplash.
I've always found it slightly annoying to have to register... but its a very small price for some reduction in trolling.
The original bug report is definitely invalid in context... something must be wrong with bbjimmy's client. I've been logged in and have been helping yayfoxes get Haiku installed. IRC is high enough on the "nerd chart of nerdiness" that not requiring authentication is of little advantage anyway. I dare you to find a non programmer/tech savvy friend that knows what it is I think I've only ever met like 2.

The ban (should) be removed now. Please let me know if it isn't (send me a /msg on IRC or email.)

It was discussed with Alex and Puck, but I suppose that a more formal discussion would have been better, yes.
I have been registered on freenode for ever ... i get:
Registering is not enough. You have to authenticate (log in) every time you connect to the server. Adding your password into the "server password" option in Vision will do this for you.
The IRC channel requires authentication with NickServ (instructions on how to do this: https://freenode.net/faq.shtml#nicksetup) in order to post messages, because lately there have been a large number of trolls in the channel. Requiring NickServ authentication cuts down on said trolls because it forces users to register an account and verify their email.
I suppose we could add that link to the topic of the channel if there are enough people confused about how to use NickServ...
