Subpixel anti-aliasing causes glyph overlapping

Description

When I just tested R1B1 rc1 (hrev52295+96, x86_64) in VirtualBox, and turned on sub-pixel antialiasing (and left on hinting) in the Appearance preflet, I noticed that the default font, Noto, does not render very nicely (see attached screenshot). It is more apparent for smaller font sizes, as you can see in the screenshot.

This occurs with all fonts, not just Noto.
