#16677 new bug

Translation problems when more then one preferred language is set

Reported by: thaflo Owned by: nobody
Priority: normal Milestone: Unscheduled
Component: Kits/Translation Kit Version: R1/Development
Keywords: preferred language, Cc:
Blocked By: Blocking:
Platform: x86-64

Description (last modified by thaflo)

I encountered a partial translation of the App "Tipster" under following circumstances: If in preferences -> locales is set only English as language, the app is in English If in preferences -> locales is set English and German as language, the app is half in English, half in German. As you see in the screenshot, the App reads and prints the preferred language in the Terminal. Please see screenshots

Same behavior with the App "Clipdinger". It matters if German is first on the "Preferred Languages" list or English.

Why should I set two ore even more preferred languages? I mean, what is preferred in this case? For me it's not clear, which language in this case should be used in applications. Maybe for the translation kit isn't neither :-)

The languages are in a sorted list. If the first language is not available for a specific string, the second one is used, and so on.

There are no "translations" for english because it's the language the app is written in. Maybe that's the problem. Does the same thing happen if you pick other languages? (for example french + german or spanish + german?)

What if you put german first, and english in second place in the list?

With German first, there should be no string fallback because Clipdinger https://i18n.kacperkasper.pl/projects/5 and Tipster https://i18n.kacperkasper.pl/projects/16 are fully translated in German.

Tipster tips are not catalogs but text files loaded from /boot/system/data/Tipster. That could explain why they behave differently from app menu and are always translated.

I replicated the problem with Tipster menu putting English (UK) first and French second, the app menu remains in French. There's no translation file for French so I don't know if tips are switching or not.

I wasn't able to replicate the problem with Clipdinger. Replicants menu need a Tracker & Deskbar restart to be translated correctly. So, Clipboard monitor replicant menu is half translated until you do it.

Checked different apps didn't find one with same problem.

Thanks for the explanation. Tips always get read in correct language, Menu entries not.

Here are more tests: I added Italian as language

German (Germany)
Italian (Italy)
English (Europe) btw, tested also English (UK) and English (America)

-> App menus German

Italian (Italy)
German (Germany)
English (Europe) btw, tested also English (UK) and English (America)

-> App menus Italian

English (Europe) btw, tested also English (UK) and English (America)
Italian (Italy)
German (Germany)

-> App menus -> Italian

English (Europe) btw, tested also English (UK) and English (America)
German (Germany)
Italian (Italy)

-> App menus -> German

The Deskbar languages is always set correctly when I restart it after changing the preferred language.

Regarding the menu, Clipdinger behaves like Tipster here. pref lang 1: English pref lang 2: Italian pref lang 3: German

All languages seem to work except English. If I put English as preferred language number 1 I always get the menu in the language set as number 2.

Removing Italian and German from the preferred list, the menu is in English.

Do you have option launch at start up activated in Clipdinger?

If yes, remove it, reboot and try again. Does it change something?
