I was not able to play a commercial DVD (Region 2) with MediaPlayer.

I also experience unusably poor performance on direct CD play via tracker or any other audio app. Stutters, sound stops for periods, and disk sounds like it is seeking. If I copy .wavs off disk using tracker (seems very slow) they work fine. Reading data off disk seems fine.
