Description
When you try to boot into VESA mode, the following happens: all icons light up, after which nothing happens. Just a screen with the inscription Haiku, and all the icons are lit. Revision 55896 x86_64

Yes, if you boot with intel_extreme drivers, then there are no problems. But! If you boot in the "Use fail-safe graphics driver" mode, the above problem appears.

Ah, ok. Are you on a UEFI system? That might have something to do with it.. at least, I always have a problem the other way around: placing a graphics driver in user unpackaged hierarchy will never get loaded on such a system, even if I run 32bit in bios compat mode.

Please provide a syslog with the "Use fail-safe graphics driver" mode enabled.

You are actually running the intel_extreme driver on haswell. the driver is not yet complete for this series of chips but I hope that if you select the same mode on the desktop as is set during boot that you'll have a picture on the laptop panel.
From the syslog you're trying to set mode 1280x800, whereas the panel's native mode is 1920x1080.
From the looks of it my focus is going to be haswell indeed for the time being, so maybe we can try to improve the situation here..
