#19158 new bug

All packages tab - Separate GUI apps and the rest

Reported by: slema Owned by: apl-haiku
Priority: normal Milestone: Unscheduled
Component: Applications/HaikuDepot Version: R1/beta5
Keywords: Cc:
Blocked By: Blocking:
Platform: All

Description

Currently the "All packages" tab has over 4000 items. It is a bit daunting as a user when you want to check randomly what GUI apps are available on the system. The whole list is "littered" with stuff that only matter to developers, or at least terminal users.

It doesn't make much sense to have three versions of python setuptools and all lib*-dev packages in the same place as BePDF or Falkon.

It would be user friendly to separate GUI apps — the ones most non-coders — would use from the rest. Add a Separate tab "All Applications" and keep libraries, dev packages and commands separate, in a tab "Other packages" or something like that.

I am not sure if there are categories in haiku-ports to differentiate GUI apps from the rest.

I don't think adding separate tab is the best solution when it can be avoided.

Currently, we can only distinguish GUI apps by the fact they have a category. So my suggestion would be to change the "Category" popup menu to have the current "All categories" to only show packages with a category (= GUI apps), and add an "All packages" item to show every package (which is what the current "All categories" (incorrectly) does).

True, people will have to look at the HaikuDepot GUI, identify its widgets and use them... which seems to already be a problem for some people when it comes to tabs...
