#19425 closed bug (fixed)

Boot failure on Framework laptop, AMD Ryzen 7840U

Reported by: jbmorley Owned by: nobody
Priority: normal Milestone: R1/beta6
Component: System Version: R1/beta5

Description

Neither beta5 nor hrev58648 are booting successfully for me on the Framework 13" with the AMD Ryzen 7840U configuration with 96GB RAM and an 8TB SSD.

beta5 shows the splash screen but all the subsystem icons are remain greyed out while recent nightly builds (including hrev58648) hang on a blank screen. The long press Ctrl+Alt+Del work from this blank screen to restart the system.

Needless to say I'd love to be able to run Haiku on this laptop and I'm very happy to help in whatever way I can. Unfortunately there's no serial console so I'll need some pointers as to how to get started capturing useful information :).

Can you get into the bootloader menu on either build? For the EFI loader that means you spam the spacebar.

There is a ticket about the Steam Deck not booting with nightlies because it doesn't have a serial line, and trying to write to the serial line just hangs forever. Nobody has fixed that bug yet; but the release build has serial out disabled by default so it isn't affected. The boot may be then failing before the kernel actually initializes due to the amount of RAM you have; on the beta it depended heavily on system memory layout (on nightly builds that much RAM should generally work, that bug has been fixed.)

I can get into the bootloader menu on beta5, but not on the most recent nightly. Are there some specific things you'd like me to try?

Please retest after hrev58667 (should be in tonight's nightly build.)

Thank you! I can confirm that I can boot successfully as of hrev85672, booting off a USB A memory stick. Curiously a get a boot failure when plugged directly into a USB-C port but that's clearly a different issue and I'll dig into it independently. I think we can closed this as fixed!
