Have you set your screen resolution to 1440 x 900?
If not, your monitor will probably stretch the screen to fill the entire monitor, resulting in very bad looking text (and other UI elements, but text is most visibly affected).

Yes, i've set it to 1440 x 900, but this didn't help. On this monitor font looks bad with every resolution i tried.

Please close this as invalid. It seems that RAMDAC speed is not enough to handle 1440 x 900 properly. I have the same problems with ubuntu/fedora.

FWIW, poor font rendering was because of a cheap and thin vga cable. Replacing it with proper cable improved font quality considerably. Somehow Windows and Ubuntu managed to have better (still not perfect) font quality even with old cable.
Same thing with Ubuntu actually, I would need to try windows.
