It is called VLC when it's running, and that's pretty much how it's referred to officially.
VideoLAN is technically the name of the organization that distributes it, not the same of the software itself (which used to be referred to as the "VideoLAN Client").
I think VLC is suitable.

If you read press releases from the VLC team, they seem to be very strict about having it called "VLC media player" with exactly this capitalization. :-)

This is true, I installed the latest version on my Windows box to confirm - the actual link in the start menu is called "VLC media player" (even though it is in a group called VideoLAN)
I updated the patch to reflect this.

Wll maby not. I would want VLC media player as a menu, but not as binary name. It would be easy to lauch a movie from terminal like "vlc movie.avi". But now you have to "VLC\ media\ player movie.avi"

I would tend to agree with diver.
On other platforms, the executable name is only "vlc" while the link is "VLC media player".
I'd rather prefer the shorter process name when looking at running processes anyway, and I don't think "vlc" is ambiguous enough to cause any confusion.
I vote for changing the binary back to vlc (per the standard distribution).

Both "Pe" and "VLC" are listed in Deskbar. request to close this ticket.

I added a patch that substitutes new names for the links in OptionalPackages.
I also used this opportunity to give a better descriptive name for the VLC.zip that is created in the downloads folder (helpful if the version changes in the future).
