There doesn't seems to be a general 404 handler in place for haiku-files.org For example ​http://www.haiku-files.org/testing

Right. It also needs to be enabled on download.haiku-os.org, which doesn't have a 404 handler either: ​http://download.haiku-os.org/things/stuff

Hm, I really wonder what purpose a 404-handler like the one linked above (especially the version with an embedded font) would serve for a pure download site.

What's the problem with the standard web server message? It's ugly, granted, but so what?

I agree with zooey. I don't think a custom 404 is necessary here, IMHO.
