I don't think my RX 480 works well either (it is added to the driver, but I think it was producing black screens on boot. I do know i blacklisted Radeon HD on my main desktop)
It has been a few years since i've looked at the Radeon HD driver, maybe it's time to see if I can get the new cards supported.
If we can get it working without *major* regression introducing work, then having it in a R1/Beta 2 package update is likely.
