In 14: "ata 0 error, error bit is set". Probably related.

Do you have this message if you boot 32bit Haiku?

comment:3 by TmTFx, 5 years ago

No, 32 boots normally (it's installed in that system). As far as I remember the same problem occured with an external dvdrom reader, but later this night I will confirm it.

comment:4 by TmTFx, 5 years ago

So, I tried: I burned a new dvd to exclude media errors, usb external dvd-rom reader boots haiku 64bit fine, internal dvd reader gives the error, but internal dvd reader boots fine 32bit haiku.

as recent hrevs 53458, both cdroms, x86_gcc2 and x86_64, boots regularly from internal cdrom reader, but no 32 bit OS nor 64 bit installations boot from hard drive. Same error "ata 0 error, error bit is set". So I tried to reinstall the beta1 on hard drive and it works! So the problem appeared after beta 1

I'm trying different versions of haiku and I found that beta1 x86_64 boots and installs fine, as well as x86_gcc2. So I really don't understand what's going on, a random error? In some version the bug appears in some other it doesn't, in some appears on boot time while reading from cd, in some booting from hard drive... For example: hrev53458 x86_64 boots from cd but the installation on hard drive doesn't boot hrev53169 x86_64 doesn't even boot from cd hrev53001 x86_64 boots from cd and installation on hard drive works beta1 x86_64 both cd and hard drive boot work

Yes, it is probably intermittent somehow.

comment:8 by TmTFx, 5 years ago

After trying again and again on bare metal, I thought that a comparison with a virtual machine was necessary, because I strarted to think that this bug was not related to that specific machine. After downloading several hrevs, I found that when booting from external cd-rw/dvd-rw the "error bit is set" error occured, this one did not happen when booting the same hrev from iso image (within Virtualbox), still a strange slowdown happened and sometimes it was impossible to boot to Desktop after picking "boot to Desktop" (still often they succeeded). So I thought it was a faulty download and so I tried to download again the iso but the md5 hash is the same for both isos. I burnt the newer downloaded iso and tried it. Result: kdl on boot (that doesn't show up when booting from iso directly). Are you experiencing any trouble installing from (for example) hrev 53458 x86_gcc2?

OK probably It's my burner that creates those faulty cd-roms... I'll investigate a little more, and soon I'll let you know if closing this ticket. Sorry for the time spent on this...

comment:10 by TmTFx, 5 years ago

Ignore last reply, the problem isn't the burner (I tried another one, known to work), please keep the ticket open

Can you retest with a recent nightly?

give me some days and I'll retest the machine

Replying to waddlesplash:

It seems that with hrev55608 64bit there's no bug and boots right to the desktop from the CD-ROM, but as said before, it looks like an intermittent error, I didn't try to reinstall it on hard drive.
