ESC doesn't always close Deskbar menu

Description
This is hrev54249.
When you click the Deskbar menu and move your mouse pointer over Applications, Preferences, Demos etc. and press ESC, the virtual folder is opened. ESC should just close the Deskbar menu.
Interestingly, if you keyboard-navigate to Applications, Preferences, Demos etc. so the item is highlighted, ESC does the right thing and closes the Deskbar menu.

I am able to replicate the issue exactly as described by @humdinger in the latest nightly (hrev54379).

I really should complete that menu patch, it fixes a lot of things. But I am currently busy on other things.
