Summary: | Add wallpapper package to release build → Add wallpaper package to release build |
---|
We already have at least one wallpaper package. https://depot.haiku-os.org/#!/?bcguid=bc1-GLUW&srchexpr=wallpaper
This ticket is about including such package in the release build and _maybe_ setting some wallpaper by default.

I have gathered a selection of 5K wallpapers from Unsplash, they can be downloaded from here. We can add the selected wallpaper submissions in addition to these wallpapers, if there are no objections.
All except one looks good, only with Edgy Clouds the filename text is not readable. The recent algorithm apparently thinks the wallpaper is dark enough to display white foreground colour. If there is no easy fix, I can take it out of the package.
Also, if this is going to be hosted as a package, I think we should have an artwork/wallpaper repository within HaikuArchives. That way it would be easier to upload/manage content. We already have a bunch of wallpaper submissions and their source files that we have nowhere to upload to.

Artwork can be uploaded to https://github.com/haiku/artwork
Personally, I find most of those Unsplash images to be rather uninspired and plain, some quite garish due to the popular over saturated HDR. Why not just stick to the many great unique submissions we got?

Well, you can. These are just some suggestions, maybe some people just prefer natural images. It's up to you to decide on how to proceed.

Did you try adjusting background colour to make filename text readable?

No. It's supposed to be readable with very light backgrounds.

There's already a package wallpapers_unsplash in HaikuDepot maybe it would be better to add yours to it?

They are decent wallpapers but limited to 1080p. Not proofed for every screen size, nowadays 2K+ screens are pretty common.

If they still are online, you can check if there is a better resolution. I.e in city subfolder https://unsplash.com/photos/Ek6LRoaengY

No, it does not, Tracker hasen't and still doesn't take the wallpaper into account when calculating the text color, the only thing it does is add a text shadow. You probably want to set a different background color to fool tracker, but then it is still all or nothing, white or black. (Or the user color with sufficient contrast)
On a second note, what is the point of first asking the community for wallpapers and then including random ones? The wallpapers in your package don't look that nice on my somewhat common 1200p (though the default is 1080p, i just use a 16:10 one) screen, I see no good justification to include 5k wallpapers per default and have them look terrible on normal screens, there is a reason we use vector graphics normally... should probably just fix translator to render them to the correct resolution instead.

Milestone: | R1/beta3 → R1/beta4 |

Move unsolved issues to beta 4 since there is no chance of fixing them now.

Milestone: | R1/beta4 → Unscheduled |

Moving various tickets out of the beta4 milestone because no one is actively working on them.
why not release them right now?
