Software Updater window should close itself if no Updates where found

Reported by: bruno Owned by: perelandra
Priority: low Milestone: Unscheduled
Component: Applications/SoftwareUpdater Version: R1/beta2

Description (last modified by diver)

Closing its window if no update is available after a short delay... It is annoying to close a window if no updates are found each time.

It could use notification for that or auto close in 5 seconds.

Instead of a popup saying no updates available, how about it just say that in the results window instead?

I think auto-closing windows are a "dark pattern" and prefer we not go that way for anything except notifications. If a popup is used, then yes, consolidating that does make sense.

I don't like this, especially with low internet speeds clicking check for updates and getting a coffee or something is an okay pattern, I don't want to return to my computer and have to guess what happened since it isn't obvious whether

if softwareupdater was open only if my computer rebooted, whether the software crashed. etc.

It's not a separate alert, but is indeed displayed in the 'main' SoftwareUpdater window.

In any case, I agree that auto-closing things isn't a good idea.

whom do you agree? One window is enough to tell the User that there is no Update now! Even with a slow connection one has not to wait more than 3 min to get results here. No need to open the second notification window.

With waddlesplash who said auto-closing windows is bad, and nephele who provided an example why that is.

All information is already shown in the single SoftwareUpdater window. We seem to all agree there's nothing to change then...

Sometimes there are just to many windows open, which could be avoided.
