ess solo sound playback crash

This was on the pre built image from the 17 oct 2008, I wanted to test haiku with some music, so I found that without OSS I couldnt get any sound output and no sound settings in the media preferences, so I installed OSS from haikuware, and installed the latest VLC also from haikuware, I mounted my Zeta partition, and started playing an mp3 from that zeta partition, it played on and off from fine to stuttery for around 30secs, and then it seemed to have locked haiku up, it didnt respond to any keyboard nor mouse input, only a hard reset would work. my sound hardware is an onboard ESS Solo. I have also tried this with real hardware installs of my own compiled versions, and get the same response, with the svn'd version i updated from 18oct 2008.
