Open AboutSystem, make sure memory usage is < 10%.
Do something to increase the memory usage to > 9%. The left hand copyright/maintainers column will shrink slightly, causing an annoying flicker.

Hmm, I don't get any flicker on VESA. The right panel just resizes. What graphics driver are you running? You can check by opening the Screen preflet and hovering the mouse over the screen image on the left side of the window (just above the word Workspaces).

Flicker was the wrong word - in fact, the panel resizes as you have described.

It also depends on the used locale, which of the strings on the left column is longest, and which distro compatibility setting you use (some of them include a logo which also sets a lower bound on the size of the panel). In my case, the "total memory" line is the longest so I can't reproduce it either, but that depends on the hardware setup and wether you have "unreachable" memory or not.
