Mounting (functional/clean) DVD causes hard freeze

Description

On our IBM ThinkPad X41, I've removed the hard disk since it crashed, and have been booting Haiku off a USB stick.

After booting, I try putting in any DVD--ones that work fine on other computers and show no scratches--and after a few seconds, Haiku completely freezes. I can eject the DVD by pressing the button on the drive itself, but that doesn't unfreeze it.

If I put the disc in before bootup, it stalls forever on the middle disk icon while booting Haiku.

The computer can boot off the DVD drive itself, so I know the drive works well enough.

Priority: highnormal

What kind of disk controller is in that system? AHCI or some other SATA variant? Also is that DVD drive IDE or SATA? Ideally also please provide a syslog or early boot log from around the time things froze.

It's PATA for both, I'm pretty sure. It's a pretty old system. At least that's what one person here says: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Tablet-ThinkPad-Laptops/PATA-or-SATA-for-X41-T/td-p/121698

I went to test this recently and Haiku stopped being able to boot up altogether on that machine. Although with a newer nightly it would at least not hard freeze, but couldn't play a DVD. It would mount OK enough to see the title in VLC and view the files in Tracker. Then a reboot or two later and I could not boot. It's possible it's hardware-related: there's no HDD in the system at all since it died, so I've only been able to boot off a USB stick or DVD. That said, I put the latest XBMC on the stick now and it plays the same disc just fine on the same system. Anyway, having done that I forgot you were waiting for a syslog, so that option is gone now that I overwrote Haiku with XBMC...I'll have to try again another time but thought I'd update for now anyway.

is this still an issue on a recent nightly build?

comment:6 by Kev, 8 years ago

Sorry, I have no idea. I had to give away that desktop box because I was moving long-distance and couldn't afford to ship it with me.

Resolution: fixed
Status: newclosed

Ok, no worries. I'm going to close this one out. I have a 915 system which seems to work ok lately. Feel free to reopen if anyone else sees this same issue on the same hardware.
